The Church isn’t Closed

I see a lot of people online up in arms about “the closing of the church.” We may not be able to gather in person, drink our church brand coffee, or go to our nice church buildings but the Church is not closed.

You can’t shut down a people group.

I don’t see the Church being closed down. I see the Church adapting to its current situation. Thousands of churches who had never streamed are now streaming weekly. Thousands who would never have walked into a church service are now walking into the digital lobby of churches all over the world.

I see the Church being the Church as people help those in need in their communities and become a light for those walking in these dark times.

It seems like “May 1st” is a buzz word now. The light at the end of this dark tunnel I see churches looking towards but the truth is the social distancing guidelines may end on May 1st or they may not.

Neither outcome means that the Church is any less the Church.

Neither outcome decides if we can help those in our community.

Neither outcome decides if we can preach the Gospel to those who haven’t heard the good news.

I am not saying that we should “forsake the assembly” (Heb 10:25). I am actually saying the opposite. I see the Church standing up, adapting to the situation, and making sure the assembly of believers can still happen by whatever means necessary:

  • Live streamed services
  • Zoom call Bible studies
  • Video chat communion
  • Care package drop-offs
  • Prayer list warriors
  • Bible app group reading plans
  • Recorded video
  • And the list goes on and on.

We don’t know what tomorrow may bring but it will worry about itself.

I just want to encourage everyone who is worried about the Church that as long as there are followers of Jesus who are willing to carry out the Great Commission there is nothing that can stop the Church. NOTHING. It may LOOK different but it can’t be stopped.

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

God is in control. Let’s be the Church and bring the HOPE and LOVE of Christ to those in our community who do not know Him. Let’s show the world that it may look different from the outside but the Church has not and will not be stopped.
